Reading Edith Wharton’s “Old New York” (Scribner, 1995), a collection of four novellas, bestows the gift of rediscovering this wonderful writer. Yes, she wrote about the upper crust of New York society, their Gramercy Park townhouses and European sojourns. But at bottom her subject is us–our dreams and self-delusions, foibles, doomed infatuations and economic woes. In sentence after sparkling sentence, her wit and her superb command of the English language never fail to delight. To read Wharton’s novels (“The Age of Innocence,”,”Ethan Frome” and others) and her many short stories is to be transported from our current woes. JLL
